About Life Coaching

What is life coaching and is it for you?

Life coaching provides a conversation that allows you to focus on goals and the changes you desire to make in life.  Coaching helps push you past the brain’s anti-change signals to get more of the things you want in life.

Anti-change signals?

As a nurse, I’ve always liked science.  The fact that coaching and the tools used in coaching actually effect neurotransmitters and neuro-pathways in your brain fascinates me.  The pre-frontal cortex of your brain is what sets you apart from other species, and is where change is initiated.  The basal ganglia or “lizard brain” is the brain’s automatic pilot.  This part of the brain is essential because it protects you, and also involves you in repetitive, routine activities.

Basically, the prefrontal cortex tends to become tired quickly and is always seeking easy, efficient, routine ways to get you through your day.  For that reason, it pushes as many thoughts and behaviors to the lizard brain as possible, where they become difficult to change.  The lizard brain is responsible for keeping you safe, so it often sends you into a hyper-vigilant state, floods you with emotion, stress and keeps you on high alert.  Generally, you are completely unaware of how often this happens to you.  To change these automatic habits, you need to find a way to forge new circuits in the pre-frontal cortex.  With enough attention and focus, we can rewire our brains with our own thoughts. The more the new pathway is used, the stronger it becomes.

Focusing on changing your thoughts and habits is extremely difficult to do on your own.  That’s where I can help.  I am trained to keep you, your brain, and your body engaged in new thoughts and behaviors.  When you coach with me, I will help you set up a structure where you create and deepen those new circuits.  We will build the capacity for your brain to stop resisting change and support long-term transformation.

Working Together

I practice a combination of co-active coaching and positive intelligence coaching. The co-active part helps you look deeper into yourself for answers, because you already have them. From there you will:

  • easily develop new positive neural networks

  • respond more calmly to stress

  • make choices more easily

  • become more creative

Positive Intelligence refers to a technique used to strengthen your “wise” or “sage” self and weaken your “saboteurs”, therefore reinforcing your new neural pathways. Working with me will enable you to rewire your brain in ways that create openness and the optimal environment for neuroplasticity, leading to lasting, transformative change.
